Work to begin on Highway 87 south

Highway 87 will soon see some much needed shoulder widening and resurfacing. The almost 20-mile stretch of highway under construction is from Highway 50 at California south to Business 54 at Eldon.

Also to be worked on is Route P, which runs between Highway 87 and Main Street in Olean, which will receive an asphalt overlay. Both projects should be complete in October.

Lane closures are to be expected, with flag crews and pilot cars to guide motorists through the work zones. The pilot cars will help drivers navigate the work zones, which could include lane changes, equipment crossings, difficult crossroads or other obstacles.

At each end of the work zone, a flagger will stop traffic until the pilot car is ready to lead travelers through the work area. The pilot car will then guide them safely through the work zone. At the end of the work zone, the pilot car will pull off the road to allow the travelers to continue on their way. The car will then repeat the process, acting as a pilot car in the other direction.
