A residence in the city about a half century old has been given new life with an updated exterior and an entirely new look inside with a more open living concept for Jason and Heather Borghardt.

The house, which was a three bedroom, bath and a half home with separate living and dining rooms and kitchen is now a three bedroom, two bath home with an open concept living-dining area.

Although the entire residence is different now than it was before, the most drastic change can be seen in the kitchen. Not only was the wall between the living and dining rooms torn out, making them more along the style of a great room, the wall dividing the kitchen from the living room was removed to open the space up.

"We salvaged all the kitchen cabinets except a few upper cabinets that we removed altogether," said Heather.

They sanded and stained the cabinets with a dark stain. Then, they replaced the hardware, going with aged bronze hardware to complement the new look of the cabinets. To set it off, the back splash was done using glass mosaic tiles which run through grey, charcoal and black hues, with charcoal grout.

The finishing touch was hickory hardwood floors throughout the space of the living, dining and kitchen area, plus the hall. This flooring creates an even greater illusion of space and openness.

Instead of the old half-bath in the master bedroom, there is now a full bath. As it turned out, an over-sized closet in the half bath was the "perfect size for a large stand-up shower."

Both bathrooms have new, contemporary vanities with dark brown and black ceramic floor tiles. The bedrooms were carpeted, painted and had new light fixtures installed.

All light fixtures, door handles and hardware have been replaced with those of either an aged bronze or brushed nickel finish.

For the Jason and Heather Borghardt family, the more spacious home makes for a more relaxed style of life.

Even the exterior presents a dramatically different exterior than the original look after the installation of the dark blue color siding plus the accent added by the white-painted thick wooden trim around the windows presents a dramatically different exterior than the original look.

About the entire remodeling experience, Heather commented, "We could not have accomplished this remodel without the help of many family members and friends."
