The California Police Department is dedicated to serving the citizens of the city. Through community policing initiatives, officers seek to maintain an open relationship between the department and those they serve. A variety of programs are offered to further advance those initiatives.

The Business Watch program is designed to enhance the safety of local businesses. Merchants can contact the department and request customized training specific to their concerns, such as loss prevention and security assessments. Project Night Eyes is an effort to increase patrol in commercial areas of town. Bank safety training and active shooter training for school and day care facilities are also offered by the department.

A MedReturn box is located in the police department and is available for citizens to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs. The department collected over 82 pounds of prescription medications the last year. Vacation Watch is a service where officers check a residence during periods of owner absence. A women's self-defense class is currently under development. The class is tentatively scheduled for February and is designed to teach awareness and basic self-protection.

Members of the department are Chief Mike Ward Captain Dale Embry, Sergeant Scott Harkins, Officer Kevin Feltrop, Officer Rafael Ayala, Officer Jeffrey Fitzwater, Officer Keith Strutton and Officer Hunter Bemboom. Officer John McNay and Officer Lindell Reed serve as reserve officers. Kathy Roll is the Police Clerk.
