Lupus Garrett to exhibit Portraits of Family and War

Two subjects that remain constant are the focus of artist Lupus Garrett's latest exhibit. Beginning Sept. 25, Portraits of Family and War, will be on display at Greg Hardwick Gallery located in Brown Hall, Columbia College. An opening reception will be held Sept. 25, 6 -8 p.m. The show will run through Oct. 21. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Parking is available on 8th Ave, north of Rogers St. The sidewalk from the parking lot leads directly to the Greg Hardwick Gallery. This collection of large portraits, 24"X 30", provide a sometimes irreverent glimpse into the more peculiar aspects of our culture.

Lupus lives and works on the Moniteau County farm his family settled 183 years ago. Many generations of ancestors echo through this river bluff land and they find their way into his work. From old photographs, he scans the portraits, enlarges them and prints them on canvas. From there he paints, embroiders, and embellishes the print with a variety of appliques, buttons, beads and anything else that can be attached. The treatment is sometimes humorous and other times disturbing and provoking. As to the subject of war, he tackles a series of generals in the same fashion. With our country at peace for only a fraction of the last 279 years, he finds plenty to decorate our leaders with. Heavy topics, deftly and humorously handled give Portraits of Family and War a reason to take in the show.
