Council approves ballot issue for April 5 election

An ordinance to put an issue before the voters was approved Monday, Jan. 25, at a special meeting of the City of California Board of Aldermen. The ballot issue, called a local use tax, will be on the ballot for the April 5 election.

If approved by the voters, the ballot proposal will allow the city of California to continue application and collection of local sales taxes on the titling of vehicles, trailers, boats and outboard motors purchased from out of state.

Currently, the city receives tax money from these sales. Passage of this ballot issue means that the city continues to receive tax money from titling vehicles, trailers, etc., from out of state sales. This ballot issue is made necessary because of changes in the state laws.
