City council, tax levies, school board elections on ballot

The municipal election to be held April 5 is for school boards, city offices, fire districts, ambulance districts, water districts, and local and county issues.

School board elections

Contested school board elections are being held in three school districts:

Moniteau R-I School District (California): Three candidates are vying for the two positions up for election for the California School Board. They are incumbent Rhonda Meyer, incumbent Kyle Wirts and challenger Derek VanLoo.

Tipton R-VI School District: Four candidates are on the ballot for two open positions. They are Karla Pettigrew, Kenneth Stover, Robert (Bo) Helms and Chris "Goob" Allee.

Cole R-I School District (Russellville): Three candidates are on the ballot for two open positions. They are Shawn L. Ehrhardt, James R. Case and Paul Buschjost.

City elections

California:

• There is one contested race for the Board of Aldermen. In Ward II, incumbent Bryan Lawson is challenged by Rick Whitson.

• There is also a use tax question asking whether the city of California shall continue applying and collecting the local sales tax on titling of motor vehicle, trailers, etc., which were purchased from sources other than licensed Missouri dealers.

Clarksburg: The city's North Ward had no candidate file, leaving it as a write-in election.

Tipton:

• There is one contested race for the Board of Aldermen. In the East Ward, the candidates are Mike Kelley and Matthew Clifford.

• There is also a tax question asking whether the city of Tipton shall continue applying and collecting the local sales tax on titling of motor vehicle, trailers, etc., which were purchased from sources other than licensed Missouri dealers.

Others

Jamestown Fire District: The Jamestown Rural Fire Protection District has a tax levy question on the ballot, asking if the district's board of directors may be authorized to increase the tax levy rate for the purpose of replacement of fire trucks, fire equipment and general operating revenue. The voters are asked to increase the tax levy rate from the current 27.02 cents to 43 cents per each $100 of assessed valuation.

Moniteau County Library District - Subdistrict One: The library district has placed Proposition A on the ballot for Subdistrict One. In this proposition, the voters are asked to increase the tax levy rate from the current 10 cents to 12 cents per each $100 of assessed valuation.

The results from Tuesday's election will be available online only on the morning of Wednesday, April 6, at www.californiademocrat.com, due to press deadlines for the weekly print edition.
