California wins seven medals at Jefferson City tournament

California wrestling won a season-high seven medals (3 first place, 1 second place and 3 third place) at the Steve Johnson Wrestling Tournament in Jefferson City on Saturday.

California Pintos and Lady Pintos wrestling had one of their strongest outings of the season at the Steve Johnson Invitational in Jefferson City on Dec. 23.

For the Lady Pintos, Camryn Wingate wrestled at 105 pounds and won first place with a record of 3-0 with wins by fall over Annie Stewart, of Blair Oaks; Michaela Datsov, of Rock Bridge; and Aaliyah Washington, of McCluer North.

At 135 pounds, Bella Fulks finished fourth place with a record of 2-2. She won by decision over Ana Cuevas, of Parkway Central, 13-7 and a win by medical forfeit. She lost to Sadie Sehnert, of Wright City, and Sam Lage, of Blair Oaks.

At 170 pounds, Ivy Scroggins won first place with a record of 4-0. Her wins came by fall over Allison Kinard, of Jefferson City; Caroline Bell, of Jefferson City; Jaiden Allen, of Jefferson City; and Dy`Amond Mc Miller, of McCluer North.

At 190 pounds, Ivee Cooper finished third place with a record of 1-2. Cooper won over Ros Crane, of Blair Oaks, and lost to Lexington Johnson, of McCluer North, and Kyla Finney, of Jefferson City.

For the Pintos, Connor Farmer finished third place at 113 pounds with a record of 3-2. Farmer had wins over Daniel Jefferson Jr., of McCluer North, by technical fall 15-0; Antonio Hill, of McCluer North, by major decision 16-2; and Demetrius Crawford, of Normandy Collaborative, by decision 13-12. His losses were to Elia Attar, of Parkway Central, and Makoa Castillo, of Jefferson City.

At 126 pounds, Patrick Morrow finished second place with a record of 3-1. Morrow had wins over Karyn Smith, of Rock Bridge, by decision 15-10; Michael Gorzela, of Westminster Christian Academy, by fall and Javier Barnes, of Normandy Collaborative, by fall. His only loss came against Carter Kempker, of Blair Oaks.

At 144 pounds, Jackson Barnard finished third place with a record of 3-2. Jackson's wins came over Je'Son Meeks, of McCluer North. by fall; Tyrion Phipps, of Normandy Collaborative, by fall and Anthony Cook, of Westminster Christian Academy. His losses were to Deegan Mitchell, of Jefferson City, and Chris Utterback, of Blair Oaks.

At 165 pounds, Kwynnon Duvall won first place with a record of 5-0. All of Duvall's wins came by fall over Elijah Ervin, of McCluer North; Anthony Seneker, of Jefferson City; Benjamin Cardetti, of Rock Bridge; Chrisod Sims, of Normandy Collaborative; and Payton Chanerl, of Parkway Central.

"The team wrestled some of their best matches of the year. Our two seniors won their brackets and others stepped up and got wins to add to our team points. The girls ended up in fourth as a team and the Boys in fifth as a team. That is a big accomplishment for us at a tournament of this caliber," head coach Lance Fulks said. "We were the only Class 1 school in the boys there. We could really see how much hard work these kids have been putting in at practice and it is definitely paying off. We are excited for the second half of the season and are getting ready to start focusing on the District Tournament."

The Lady Pintos will be wrestling at the Wonder Women Tournament at Battle High School in Columbia Dec. 28-30.
