Celebrating a trifecta with pinache

The Thompsons never considered a traditional celebration to mark three milestones - her 50th birthday, his retirement from the military and their 30-year anniversary.

Dan and Debra will host a variety show-style family celebration Saturday, Oct. 8, 2-4 p.m. at the Finke Theatre, 315 N. High St. in California.

"It's something for friends and family to come to," Debra said. "We wanted to do something so when they leave, they will feel good."

The witty pair are known for their clever banter, even hosting talent shows a their church, Southridge Baptist Church.

"It was a hoot," Debra said.

This celebration will recognize the Thompson's personal life accomplishments but also spotlight the friends and family who've been involved with their life.

Friends and family will perform talents, skits and music, following a brief renewal of vows ceremony.

Guests will have their "admit one" old-fashioned ticket punched as they enter the historic theater. They will be treated to snacks and access to a fun photo booth during the intermission between the formal vows and down-home entertainment.

And, there will be audience participation, Debra said with a smile.

"Talent is optional, laughter is mandatory," Dan said.

The couple will emcee the show filled with spoofs, props and "special" guests.

"The fun part is a lot of embarrassment will be on us," Debra said.

The California native met her Kentucky-born husband while they both were serving at Whiteman Air Force Base.

"Our life is like a book with different chapters," Debra said. "We've come a long way and I'm excited to what the next chapter brings."

Dan served 10 years in the U.S. Air Force and then 13 with the Missouri Army National Guard. And Debra has worked 16 years for the Missouri Department of Conservation as employee relations manager.

The Thompsons moved to Jefferson City in 1998. They've been separated only twice, both when Dan was deployed on military service to Diego Garcia and Afghanistan.

They attribute their successful marriage to God as their foundation and being best friends.

They each have their professional lives - Dan now renovates and flips homes full-time - but when they come home, they're adventurous together. They enjoy time outdoors and traveling.

"We have fun and laugh a lot," Debra said.
