Trains will run as usual on eclipse day in Mid-Missouri

Union Pacific counts many miles of freight rail lines within the eclipse's viewing path, and railroad officials said they do not plan to alter operations or train schedules Aug. 21, the day of the solar eclipse.

Those seeking the best view should not walk on or alongside railroad tracks or congregate near tracks, railroad officials added.

A fully loaded freight train travelling 50 miles per hour can take more than a mile to come to a complete stop, making it nearly impossible to avoid colliding with an individual, group or vehicle in its path. Many rail cars overhang up to 6 feet beyond the rails, making it a risky area, as well.

Amtrak will run its twice daily passenger train service as normal on the day of the eclipse. With heavy traffic anticipated during the weekend before and on that Monday, Amtrak officials said they are monitoring the situation to see how bookings are going. If it is heavy, then it could mean they add another passenger car to the trains.

There are some discounts for travel around this time still available and for more information on those go to amtrak.com/deals.
