Damaged Tipton R-6 sign to be replaced

The Tipton R-6 School Board was informed at the Jan. 16 meeting that the school sign on the west side of the gym will be replaced soon.

The sign was heavily damaged by the wind. The new sign will also be remounted.

A house on the east side of the school property, known as the Morlock property, will be demolished. The board approved the recommendation of Superintendent Daniel Williams for the bid of $18,370 by A&D Construction, California, for the demolition project. The asbestos abatement on the structure has already been completed.

Because of the upcoming School Board Recognition Week, the board members were presented with certificates and a gift, as a proclamation from the governor was read by Superontendent Williams. He then thanked the board, on behalf of the the school administration, staff, students, parents and community, for their dedicated service to the community.

Staff members of the year were recognized. Tony Braby presented history teacher Ralph Martin with the junior high-high school teacher of the year award. With a tie for the elementary school awards, vocal music teacher Sabra Martens was presented a teacher of the year award by Andrea Hughes, and sixth-grade teacher Ashlee Pettigrew was presented with a teacher of the year award by Deann Lawson. Amy Huhmann was presented with the support staff member of the year award by JoAnn Huhmann.

School nurse Molly Thye reported on health services for the school district. She covered goals, methods of evaluating goals and accomplishments of the program. She would like to seek certification in the coming summer from the American Red Cross to teach CPR and first aid. This would enable her to certify coaches and offer classes to interested teachers and staff. Among her plans for the future, are to schedule classroom visits by the 2017-18 school year and teach students the importance of health and wellness. Starting in the spring, she plans a quarterly newsletter to be sent by email with important health information and recipes.

Elementary Principal Kelly Kohler reported the December 2016 enrollment for K-6 at 298. Enrollment for the same month a year ago was 299. and in 2014, it was 284. Attendance for the month was 96.36 percent, up 0.36 percent from the same month a year before.

It was reported that the elementary Christmas program was held Dec. 6 in the high school gym. Performing were grades 4-6, the Pop choir and the fifth- and sixth-grade band. The Pop choir went into the community and performed at the Nutrition Center, senior care facility and the Bright Horizons pre-school.

Junior High/High School Principal Ellen Allee reported December 2016 seventh- and eighth-grade enrollment of 95 and high school enrollment of 211. Attendance for the month was 97.52 percent. The eighth-grade attendance was 98.28 percent.
