The Tipton R-VI School Board was informed by Interim Superintendent Johnny Thompson of the need for asbestos abatement before the carpets can be replaced.

The issue was voted on at the regular monthly meeting on July 10.

Thompson reported that K.A. Dutcher had problems with the tiles pulling up with removal of the old carpeting in the business and marketing classroom. Asbestos in the old tiles requires an asbestos abatement company to remove the carpet and old tiles. The Gehm Corporation, which did the abatement in the band room, was called for a bid by Thompson. The board approved the bid of $8,500 for abatement of the two classrooms.

Thompson, a retired superintendent from Columbia, was selected as interim superintendent after Daniel Williams resignation was accepted in early June. Williams is the new superintendent at Winfield School District, as of July 1. The Tipton superintendent search is on-going at this time.

The board also approved the low bid of $9,850 from Regional Security Alarms for security cameras, as recommended by Thompson. The board also approved the low bid of BrightArrow Technologies Inc. for the parent notification system for 2017-18. The costs is to be about $730, based on total enrollment.

Thompson also provided an update on the current capital projects, the district finances and the walk-through by Jim Russell of Septagon Construction in June. The staff and student surveys are complete with results expected in August.

The next regular meeting will be Aug. 14.
