James Hodshon included California on his route to carry a cross this year. The Lake Ozark resident also carried the approximately seven-foot cross around Eldon and Jefferson City.

Hodshon began carrying a cross in various cities around the area nearly 15 years ago, after he was inspired by Arthur Blessitt, a Colorado resident, who has carried a cross around the world.

He has a regular route at the Lake of the Ozarks, but takes up the cross and walks in other areas.

"God will say where I am to go," he said.

This time Hodshon said he was to come to California. During the walk recently, Hodshon, who is part of a non-denominational ministry, stops and prays for others.

"People here are really friendly," Hodshon said, as he stopped by the office of the California Democrat. He said while he prayed for others, at least one person stopped and prayed for him.

Hodshon said a Bible verse enables him to "take up the cross" - Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

He leaves it to the cross to do everything for him. He doesn't preach.

He is also on Facebook.
