New library support group already reaching goals

The Used Book Sale has been revived and the Trivia Night continues, thanks to the reorganization of the Friends of the Moniteau County Library Services.

The group recently received its 401(c)(3) IRS status and already has checked off several items on its goals list for the first year.

The main purpose of the friends group is to do things the librarian cannot, due to budget or other limitations, President Vickie Schroeder said.

"We are our own entity, but the librarian provides input," she said.

At the top of the friends' list was an early literacy program, providing a free book and library card to every newborn in Moniteau County. That project is on its way.

They also are planning to enter a float to promote the library's services in the Ozark Ham and Turkey Festival parade Sept. 15.

And, they have organized a quarterly speakers event. The first will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 on the library's second floor, featuring military historian and author Jeremy Amick.

To keep these support programs going, the friends group will need to hold fundraiser.

Posters created by children during the library's Summer Reading Program will soon be out to promote the Used Book Sale 5-8 p.m. Sept. 20, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 21 and 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 22 on the library's second floor. Paperback books will be 50 cents and hard-back books will be $1.

It used to be an annual event, but has been on hiatus for the last several years.

They also will continue the Smarty Pants Trivia Night beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the United Church of Christ. A table of eight players will cost $100.

This was a popular event for the support organization's predecessor, under the former library system.

Although they are basically the same group as that predecessor organization, Schroeder noted they have new leadership and members. And unlike their predecessor, they have the not-for-profit status, allowing them to have complete control over their own bank account.

Ann Tettlebaum is treasurer and Susan Borts, Jamestown, is secretary. The group currently is looking for a vice president.

Members of the board come from across the county, as well as a few who use the Moniteau County Library but live just over the county line. Then, there's a list of volunteers, who don't want to attend meetings or serve on the board, but who are happy to help at events or with projects.

"We try to get people from all different directions," Schroeder said. "We'd like to see the younger generation get involved.

"Everyone has a talent or knowledge that could help."
