The California City Board of Aldermen on Monday approved a bid for construction of the Northwest Sanitary Sewer Improvement Project. The project will connect Marshall and Cedar streets to the city sewer system.
The council approved the lowest bid, after the recommendation of Bartlett & West engineer Gary Davis. That bid of $940,970.60 was submitted by Donald Maggi Inc. of Rolla. The bid was more than $163,000 lower than the next lowest bid and at least $670,000 lower than the construction budget.
Because there are no grants available, the entire cost will be borne by the city.
In a related decision, the council approved $141,643 to Bartlett & West to observe and oversee the construction work.
Also approved was for the city to obtain a 15-year loan for the sewer construction project. The loan and interest were estimated to be about $1,312,659.96, figured at 4.08 percent interest.
A bid for demolition of a structure on 309 S. East St. was accepted from A&D Construction for $22,650. A second bid for $475 was approved for inspection for asbestos.
The board also approved a preliminary budget with expected revenues of $9,618,777. Budgeted expenditures were approved at $9,451,893, although that amount will increase because of additional personnel costs approved later in the meeting.
Remaining in the budget is $5,000 for California Nutrition Center.
Removed from the budget was $5,000 for the Moniteau County Library at Wood Place, as the library board had informed the city money was not needed for this year.
The repair of the roof over the locker rooms at the municipal swimming pool has been completed. The work on the 30-by-70-foot roof was done by G and R Construction, Tipton. It had sustained serious storm damage.
Spring cleanup is planned for April 16-20.
The next regular monthly meeting is set for 7 p.m. April 2 at the council meeting room in the California City Hall.
