California native collaborates with country star Keith Urban on song

Country Music Singer Keith Urban recently searched for someone to work with on his song "Drop Top," which is on his soon-to-be-released album Graffiti U. He was looking for a certain type of person. In his search, he found California-native Kassi Ashton.

Urban said in Taste of Country, "Whoever the girl is, she's gotta have the right voice, she's gotta have the right attitude, she's gotta have swagger. Legit, not faux swagger. The real deal."

Urban said, Kassi was the one. She hit the "swagger" button on the head, Urban said, and, in his opinion, her style is hers alone. She is one of the Boot's New Artists to Watch and is making her own niche in the country music world. Urban said there was no one to really compare her with.

Ashton, 24, is a newcomer to the Nashville scene. She is signed to Universal Music Group Nashville. When she graduated from California R-1 High School in 2012, she was known as Kassi Meisenheimer. She was a singer, poet and public speaker in high school, and has continued these talents as she moved on to Nashville, Tennessee, and a future in the country music industry.

The song on Urban's album Graffiti U, "Drop Top," tells of a group of girlfriends on their way to Coachella in a Jeep. The song is one of several collaborations on the album.

Now signed with UMG Nashville, Ashton is awaiting the upcoming release of her first full-length album. The new album will include "California, Missouri," a single about her hometown. Her song has a different perspective about her hometown than most, which glorify and romanticize the hometown. She earlier commented that her recording is for country fans who have more complicated relationships with their hometowns.

Graffiti U came out April 27.
