California High School Band and Choir Members Prepare for District Competition

March 30th, 2011 by Dawn Chapman, CHS Reporter in News

The CHS band and choirs have been practicing and preparing for district competition for several weeks now.

District Music Contest will be held at the Miller Performing Arts Center in Jefferson City on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2.

Jessica McKenzie, a senior choir member, who has attended Districts commented, "It's really nerve- racking and scary, but if you do well then it's really rewarding and you have an accomplished feeling."

At Districts, both band and choir members have the chance to perform ensemble or solo pieces. The band and choir also perform as a group in front of the judges. The highest score is a 1+, and the lowest is a 4-.

Caitlan Counterman, a sophomore choir member said, "I'm excited to go, my ensemble is working hard and practicing so we can get a good score."

When asked how the band has been preparing, Jessica Gammon, a sophomore commented, "We play the songs a lot to make sure we know them and can play them correctly. Mr. Rayl usually has the band practice our songs for competition throughout the week, except on Fridays when he has the ensembles and solos practice."

Michelle Broughm, a senior band member noted, "We've been practicing non-stop, every day of the week to get the songs down."

Kacie Dohlor, a sophomore band member said, "I'm pretty sure we will do great at Districts, and I can't wait to go."
