The City of California Board of Aldermen approved a bid for paving work to be done on Smith Street at its regular monthly meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the City Hall.

Two bids were received on the work which involves not only paving Smith Street but also paving a parking area between Cargill and the ball fields. The council approved the low bid of $143,089 which was submitted by Lehman Construction. The council's annual budget included $200,000 for street paving. Cargill's community improvement arm has pledged $50,000 for help with the upgrades and beautification involved in the project.

The council also approved bids for roof work for a city owned building and sludge removal and application.

Hoback Construction was awarded the bid for repair of the roof of the building north of the City Park which formerly housed the offices of Proctor Lumber. The bid amount was $570. According to the report, the roof is sound. The shingles on the west slope of the roof sustained damage from previous storms.
