Hunt underway for CHS boys track records

December 12th, 2012 in News

High school sports records that have been set over the years are on display at the California High School commons, however, missing in action are the records for boys' track. Mystery has surrounded the whereabouts of these records for some time now.

CHS Head Track Coach Rick Edwards said he discovered the boys' records were missing during his first year as the track coach 15 years ago. "Geary Labuary was the boys' track coach several years before me and he said he never saw the boys' records. Over the years, I've heard they might have been lost in the move to the new high school."

At some point after the new high school was built, the sports records, which were posted on a wall at the middle school, were moved to the new facility. It is believed the boys' track records were damaged, misplaced or lost in the move.

"We would really like to find these records," Edwards said. "I'd say we probably know what half of the records are, just from memory and from talking to people, but we need documentation of the records because they have to be accurate."

Edwards said there are a total of 18 events in boys' track.

Whether the records were damaged in the move, misplaced or simply lost is no longer the main concern; finding or replacing the records is the priority at this point. If the records cannot be found, the task that lies ahead is documenting them.

Anyone who has any information about these missing records is encouraged to call the California Democrat at 573-796-2135 or stop by the office at 319 S. High Street. CHS track alumni who have information that might be helpful are also encouraged to call or stop by. All information can be verified through the California Democrat archives.
