Tipton football player dies

November 14th, 2013 in News

The Tipton High School football player who sustained head trauma during a Halloween night game has died, his school has confirmed.

School Superintendent Scott Jarvis confirmed his death and said the district does not have a statement at this time.

Chad Stover remained in critical condition after being rushed to a hospital from the Oct. 31 game, but school officials had not elaborated on the extent of his injuries, only saying they were "very serious."

Residents in Tipton, a town of about 3,200 residents, have covered the town in red ribbons in honor of Stover. The ribbons, red for the school's color, have also been spreading on social media and to the nearby town of California, where the high school there has also hung red ribbons and put Stover's No. 18 on their field.

"The compassion and the thoughtfulness we're getting from all over the country is pretty much unbelievable. ... It's just overwhelming," Jarvis said last week. "Schools in the area are wearing red. Teams have got the number 18 on their helmets."

Chad Stover turned 17 on Nov. 8.

A Facebook page set up to update people on his condition and to encourage prayer for him received 7340 "likes."
