A California man has been charged with first-degree murder after police say he shot and killed another man inside the residence they shared in the city.

Donald Bateman, 68, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder for the killing of Antone Johnson, 43. Bateman reportedly is Johnson's father-in-law.

At about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, California police officers responded to a disturbance at a duplex at 505 W. Main St. At the scene they found Johnson inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

AP reports said the two men began arguing while working on a water heater.

He was transported to St. Mary's Health Center, where he later died.

Bateman was taken into custody at the residence.

The Moniteau County prosecutor's office charged Bateman with first-degree murder. No bond has been set, pending arraignment.

A neighbor, who was not at home at the time of the incident, said the two men had been in residence less than two months. They were believed to be from the St. Louis area and were apparently not known by neighbors.

The duplex is owned by a resident of the state of California.
