A 14-year-old Thomas Jefferson Middle School student was being held Monday night at the Prenger Family Center, after Jefferson City Police said he was the "sole suspect" in a case involving "terroristic threats" against the school.

In a news release, Capt. Doug Shoemaker explained, "Police were made aware of a possible threat that was to be carried out at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

"While we cannot discuss the details of the threat, members of the Police Department's Community Services Section, along with JCPD Detectives, immediately, once notified, began an investigation into the allegations."

Shoemaker said the teen was detained "within approximately three hours."

He added: "Investigators have no reason to believe that anyone else was involved in the threat, and the case has been referred to the officials at the Prenger Family Center."

The school district sent emails to parents of the school's students, saying the police "will have an increased presence at the school" this morning.

Neither the police nor school district released any further information Monday night.
