California loses to Southern Boone

In the first round of the California tournament Jan. 8, the sixth-seeded California Pintos lost to the third-seeded Southern Boone, 84-51.

The game did not start out well for the Pintos, as they found themselves facing a big hole early in the game. They trailed 24-7 after the first quarter and did not score until around the five minute mark.

The lead only got bigger for Southern Boone, as they ended the half up 30 points with a 51-21 lead. The Pintos were able to get the lead down to 27 points in the second quarter at 48-21, but Southern Boone hit a 3 in the closing seconds to make it a 30-point game again.

California shot 5-of-15 from the 3-point line. California had trouble dealing with Southern Boone's defense all game long, as the Pintos turned the ball over 16 times in the game.

They also had some foul trouble, as California committed 17 fouls in the game. A positive for California is they shot 12-of-19 from the free throw line in the game.

In the second half, Southern Boone would lead by as much as 40 points at 73-33. The Pintos were able to decrease the lead to as much as 33 points late in the game at 80-47.

In the second half, the Pintos played better on offense, as they were only outscored 33-30 in the half. But the deficit was too much to overcome for California.

Isaac Ash and Trystan Hees recorded a team-high 15 points apiece. Jordon Geiser had five points and Nathan Pickering had four points.

The team's next game will be at 9 p.m. Jan. 10 against the loser of the Warrensburg and St. Elizabeth game.
