RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico (AP) - Connor Syme shot a 6-under 6 to help Scotland take a one-stroke lead over Australia after the first round of the World Amateur Team Championship.
Walker Cup player Grant Forrest added a 68 at Iberostar Playa Paraiso to give Scotland a 10-under 134 total, with only the best two scores counting for the three-man teams. Robert MacIntyre had a 69.
The 20-year-old Syme topped the individual standings along with Poland's Adrian Meronk. A rangekeeper at Drumoig Golf Centre in St. Andrews, Syme won the 2016 Australian Amateur.
Cameron Davis led Australia with a 67, Harrison Endycott had a 68, and U.S. Amateur champion Curtis Luck shot 69, also opening at Iberostar Playa Paraiso in the rotation with Mayakoba El Camaleon.
Spain was third 8 under at Iberostar Playa Paraiso. Mario Galiano shot 67, Manuel Elvira 69, and Ivan Cantero 71.
The two-time defending champion United States was tied for seventh at 5 under. Oklahoma's Brad Dalke opened with a 67 at Mayakoba El Camaleon, Stanford's Maverick McNealy had a 70, and Texas' Scottie Scheffler a 73.
U.S. SENIOR AMATEUR
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dave Ryan and Matthew Sughrue each won two matches at Old Warson to reach the U.S. Senior Amateur final.
The 62-year-old Ryan, from Taylorsville, Illinois, beat Michael Dunsmore of Poughkeepsie, New York, 5 and 3 in the quarterfinals and topped Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tennessee, 1 up in the semifinals.
The 57-year-old Sughrue, from Arlington, Virginia, edged Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Georgia, 1 up in the quarterfinals and rallied to beat Kevin Cahill of Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 19 holes in the semifinals.
Against Jackson, Ryan won the 14th to take a 2-up lead, lost the 15th with a bogey and matched Jackson with a par-birdie-par finish to close out the match.
Against Cahill, Sughrue lost 15 and 16 to fall 1 down, won the 18th with a par and won the match on the 19th with another par. Sughrue also rallied against Hanzel, winning 15 and 16 to take the lead and matching Hanzel with pars on the last two holes.
U.S. SENIOR WOMEN'S AMATEUR
WELLESLEY, Mass. (AP) - Ellen Port moved into position for her third U.S. Senior Women's Amateur title and seventh USGA championship, winning two matches on her 55th birthday to reach the final.
Port, from St. Louis, beat Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville, Maryland, 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals at Wellesley Country Club and outlasted Laura Coble of Augusta, Georgia, in 19 holes in the semifinals.
Port won in 2012 and 2013 after taking U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur titles in 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2011. She will face 55-year-old Andrea Kraus of Baltimore in the final.
Kraus needed extra holes in both matches, topping Canada's Judith Kyrinis in 21 holes in the quarterfinals and Karen Garcia of Cool, California, in 19 holes in the semifinals.
