Charlotte Terwilliger

Charlotte Terwilliger, 88, died Saturday, June 22 to the comforting sounds of her family's voices and favorite songs. She was born March 23, 1925 in Albuquerque New Mexico to Leila Kinkade Slaughter and Minor Mulkey Slaughter. After her father's death, she and her mother moved to Columbia, MO. Charlotte married John Burris Terwilliger on February 10, 1952. They raised their two children, John Burris, Jr. and Charlotte Mitzi, in California, MO. She returned to Columbia, MO to live in 2005. Charlotte earned a two-year degree from Stephens College and received her Bachelor's in English degree at the University of Missouri. She later returned to the University to obtain her Masters in Education. She began her career teaching second grade before shifting to elementary art and the gifted program in the California R-1 school district. She retired in 1991. She loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time tending her flower gardens. She directed most of her creative energy to oil and watercolor paintings, sketches of fanciful creatures and realistic pen and ink drawings. Surviving are her son John Burris Terwilliger, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Kansas City; her daughter Mitzi St. John and her husband Clint of Columbia; grandson Matt Terwilliger and his wife Ali, granddaughter Carolyn Terwilliger, grandson Kyle St. John, granddaughters Leila St. John and Alana St. John and great grandsons Aniah Terwilliger, Aikem Terwilliger and Trysten Hoffmeister. Her husband and a newborn daughter preceded her in death. Charlotte asked that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. A private family burial took place.
